Notre Dame can register for this class as non-degree students at Holy Cross College provided they conferred with and were granted permission from their Notre Dame assistant/associate advising dean before registration. Saint Mary’s students can transfer the credit through the NICE consortium. The Wind River Range in Central Wyoming is a popular backpacking destination, famous for its soaring peaks, clear high alpine lakes, fly fishing and stargazing. On this trip, you will spend a week hiking five to seven miles a day deep into untouched remote wilderness. Plan on bringing good hiking boots and a deep capacity for wonder in the presence of breathtaking vistas!  

ROCK CLIMBING 

Spend the week rock climbing in Lander, Wyoming. Lander is home of the annual International Climber’s Festival, and hosts a great variety of sport climbing, from beginner to advanced. This trip will be an introduction into rock climbing, with a large focus on technique. By the end of the trip the goal will be that every student is proficient in Rock Climbing, allowing you to continue in the sport throughout college.

Packrafting

On this trip, you will get an introduction into river travel on a packraft. Participants will spend the bulk of their time on the river, taking a leisurely paddle through Utah’s Labyrinth Canyon. Each night they will camp on a beach and spend the evening exploring side canyons, going on day hikes, and having conversations with each other around the fire.

Trip Information

 
    • Register for a trip on the website by April 30, pay a deposit, and complete the paperwork (medical forms, liability waver, etc).

    • A $300 non-refundable deposit is required upon registration. The final balance is due a month prior to each trip.

    • All courses have a maximum capacity and are filled first-come-first-serve.

    • If the course the participant sign up for is cancelled due to low enrollment the participant will be given the opportunity to sign up for a different trip, or will receive a refund of the deposit.

  • All participants sign a waiver. A signature by a parent or legal guardian is required for participants under the age of 18.

    • Between $1300-1700, depending on activities, logistics, number of days, number of staff involved.

    • The cost of the trip includes everything needed from the beginning to the end of the course, including pick up and drop-off at the indicated airport, all food throughout the trip, all backcountry equipment and gear, instructor wages, campground and permit fees, etc.

    • Participants are responsible for the cost of their own airfare or other transportation to and from the start/end of the trip at the indicated airport.

    • FLIGHTS typically should be scheduled to arrive before 12 noon on the start day of the course, and to depart after 3:00pm the concluding day. WONDER staff picks up students at the indicated airport.

    • GENERAL AWARENESS. participants must be ready to be involved in rigorous activities for a minimum of five days straight at elevations often between 9,000 and 11,000 feet and tolerate being away from cars, roads and cell service for the duration of each trip.

    • HYGIENE. Typically, for a multi-day backpacking or river trip, participants will not have access to bathroom facilities for the majority of the trip. At the beginning of the course, instructors will go through how to go to the bathroom in the woods while maintaining comfort, hygiene, and privacy. Trips will be provided with the opportunity for showers prior to travel home.

    • SLEEPING. Unless otherwise specified all of WONDER in nature trips are camping trips. Participants must be ready to sleep on the ground with a foam sleeping pad. Tents are provided and sleeping bags and sleeping pads are available. The tents provided typically sleep 4-6 participants. Male and female participants will have separate tents.

    • FOOD. Common dietary restrictions, if noted on the health form participants will receive as a part of registration, will be accommodated with no extra cost. Participants will cook their own meals over a camp stove with instructors’ mentorship.

    • EXPERIENCE/PHYSICAL FITNESS: No previous experience backpacking or climbing is necessary – professional instructors will teach technical skills. However. the best ways to enhance wilderness experience is to arrive to the trip physically fit. We do encourage some basic conditioning prior to each trip, especially if participants are coming from a sedentary life-style and/or lower elevations.

    • WONDER provides top of the line equipment and professional instructors for each trip.

    • Participants are asked to bring some personal items (i.e. good quality boots, layers) and are able to borrow additional required items from our equipment center at no additional cost
